DEVLOG#33 – Quests in Delivering Dialogues

Ahoy Ascenderian Matey! Garnet be here!

It’s been a while since I wrote my article last time. After the prologue story of Ascender, this time I want to share about my challenging quest in creating some in-game dialogues.

1st challenge : wondering

This my very first challenge when I had some discussions with the game conceptor and the game designer. We discuss a lot of things verbally and it flew like a water in a river when its happening on my imagination. But when I start to open my computer and face the document file for dialogues,  most of the times I  stuck wondering what the NPC should say as we discussed before. I’m an action game and RPG lover, then it’s causing first thing in my imagination is about voice over. Here is the real deal! Ascender doesn’t have any voice over in-game, it’s all about text based dialog that some words or messages are easier to deliver them verbally / directly with voices. When a player are having a game experience, he or she doesn’t know about my imagination is all about. So, I have some limitation in expressing voices on my head into some texts (I have to remind myself to think about Pokemon Mode or some 2D Isometric online gaming mode).

2nd challenge : characters, the way they think, the way they feel

Okay, I have been criticized in this matter so often  by teammates. It has the connection with the 1st challenge where I have to feel the same way or at least think the same way as the character that I’ve made (not all the characters that I made, anyway). Some of the characters inspired by real persons around me, but others are just made by the creativity or real person that I’ve never been interact with. In example, Professor Toro Hudo is the main character, I met some professors before and know exactly their style when we had a conversation, but I never knew they had limbless child or not. Is Prof. Toro say the words like a wise man? yes? But does he feel stressed about working on Ocean’s limbs? Is he never gone in a lunatic mode? And so on….. So, first time I make Professor Toro didn’t have any stand out character, all of his dialogues just flat as new cutting board :

“I think it is the sound of boiling pot downstairs. Sky, please turn off the pot.”

I’ve been scolded by my friends. I think again “Toro is a professor that so detail and dedicated in his work, so sometimes he forget what he did before and become panic after realizing it”. To deliver this idea, the dialogue became :

*Sizzling sound effect*

“Oh! I forgot to turn off the stove downstairs. Sky, please help me to turn it off!!”

There it goes all the way around….

3rd challenge : clue

Hah! My game designer is my enemy in this case!! Hahahahaha. Nah, I don’t really mind it. But this is also tough challenge. Why? Because sometimes it is really weird when I want to express the character but also have to deliver clues about a task or background story(easier because I’m the one who made it) or location. For the example, my game designer created one NPC to give a clue about who Sky has to find, NPC name is Stressed Villager :

“Someone call Marcel in Mustang, please! My life is ruined if this elevator can’t work!”

See? It’s weird if just looks like that, I break it down into 2 dialogue section :

“Darn it! No..no…no…! Why’s the elevator out of order?! I’m going to be late! I’ll lose my job!”

“Someone call Marcel, The Head Techinician, in Mustang, please! My life is ruined if this elevator can’t work!”

There’s 2 added points that I want to be clear about in revised version. First, the stressed character have to stand out. Second, the reason of finding Marcel, because he is the  head technician!

Simplified words for this challenge : Motivation and reasoning of clues.

4th challenge : length

This is the stuffs that I learned about. I just copy and paste the first point of that article and you may know what’s the deal with this matters and the relation with previous challenges.

1. Concision -“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.”

Has Hofman was onto something when he said that.  Concision is probably the absolute most important quality any writer, of any medium, can develop.  Verbosity kills, especially in this day and age where writing needs to be clear, concise, and interesting.  Dickens would not have survived long as a writer in the games industry, but Hemingway might have.

Think of a simple example, say, of an NPC asking you to kill some wolves for them.  It seems like some variation of this quest has appeared in every game in history, so let’s start off with a base example of terribleness:

“Hail, noble traveler.  Please, permit me to beseech your aid.  I am Jammers, a peasant in service to Count Argyle.  A pack of wolves have taken to my flock of prized sheep.  I intended to give one to the Count as a tribute for this year’s harvest festival.  If you kill 10 of them, I will reward you with 50 gold pieces.”

So much pointless information.  There are 62 words in the exchange above, you can get that down to half, or even a third.

“Traveler, help me!  Giant wolves have taken to my flock.  Kill 10 and I will give you 50 gold pieces.”

Much better.  In 20 words you’ve delivered every bit of relevant information the player needs to know what to do.  They need to kill some wolves to get the gold.  It’s not the most exciting sentence ever, but it gets the job done.  The essence of concision is understanding what you yourself are trying to say and helping you put it to paper.  Once you’ve sheared away all the fluff and gotten to the heart of what needs to be said, everything else is pie.

5th challenge : fonts, grammatical and punctuation

Well, I’m not so excel in my English and often make mistakes in this matter. Not without consideration as I’m taking the act as the writer with my “not so excel in English”. I’m just careless in delivering the right English. Yeah, this challenge is actually I’m dealing with myself. Luckily, one of the art team has a good capability to do the proof read! She’ve been a great help for me! Woohoo!

Moreover, I also use these three things to show some characters in NPC. For example, the illiterate butcher, Vincent Ursa :

“Bucket… Empty… Upstairs… Need….. Water…..”

or the angry meat trader, Zlatko Boban :

“If you’re in business with Vherand again, ASK HIM WHERE ARE MY SHARPENED METALS?!?!?!”

I hope you see the difference between those two NPC’s character.

DEVLOG#27 – Playing with Water….

Hello all, it is now Amethyst writing the blog and we finally meet again to talk about game design aspect of Ascender. Lets begin and get wet!

One of the new element in Mustang that will be part of game play element is water. The water element is inspired when I played Splatoon, I love how they incooperate splating ink into the game. For those who don’t know the game, you can check out video below and if you have a Wii U you should consider to put the game into your collection.

Mustang is the center of farming  activities of GOA’s civilization. After thinking and experimenting a lot on creating water based puzzle, we decided that water is going to be one of the hazard that the player need to avoid. We are also able to control the flow of water in some part of the water to solve the puzzle. Well, water is going to be a central theme for puzzle in Mustang.

Well, lets see the water in Action 🙂

As you can see the water is flowing down as it is triggered. The question is why does Sky need to do it? Well, we can actually move item from one place to another using the water 🙂 So you need to be witty in order to finish the puzzle.

Here’s a variation of puzzle where sky not only need to figured out how to get to the lever but also need to figured how to do it before the water is flooding up. Wait, what is that box with a target in the middle of it? Well, it is another new puzzle element to play with 😀

I want to show more but we can’t wait for all of you to test the puzzles yourself. We are currently preparing something for all of you to test, hopefully next week you can try it all out.

Cheers,

Amethyst

DEVLOG#18 – Happy Holiday ! Closing the year with behind the scene on Alpha Design

Dear Ascenderians,

We meet again 🙂 I am Amethyst the game designer of Ascender. As you might experience from our alpha, there are various type of puzzle or obstacle that is both compulsory or not in order to finish the alpha. It is indicated at the end of the alpha where you are given the information of how many task you finished or item you have.

Our friend can not collect all the item while testing

So, we had design some level with different type of puzzles using box, lever and light rope on Dolopo. We even have developed some level design for districts in Helion. We basically try to create a huge world consist of puzzle laying around the city to explore. But upon discussing with amber, chalcedony and garnet, we need to create a better way to expand the world (so you won’t easily bored) and create a more variative type of puzzle (not just FedEx Puzzle).

Puzzle Design

So, I go back to my game design guidelines and trying to implement more design on various problem rather than just put puzzle on the Alpha. We added the basic running task (The next level will include a surprise where the environment will change while you are competing with Nippytron), pattern puzzle which is figuring out when is Meowl will land, a simple fedex puzzle that has a night and day attribute, and also we implement jigsaw power up problem where you need to change up the rune in order to grab some item.

Some puzzle that are implemented in alpha

As I mentioned before, in the surface everything looks easy. There are complication when we change what we want to Implement. Dialogue changes, art improvement and I even need to change the level design several time.

That is all from me at the end of this year, I can’t believe that we are already passing the Alpha milestone. We are currently preparing ourselves for Greenlight Campaign. Wish us luck 🙂

Me and all my friend in the studio would wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !!!

DEVLOG#14 – I am part of Ascender and I am an intern…

Dear Ascenderians,

My code name is Fire, I am actually an intern in GameChanger team. I started working with them in september and within a few weeks my internship term will be finished. I wanted to share you my experience before and after joining the team as 2D Artist.

Experiencing the industry is probably one of the biggest thing that haunts me since high school. There are a lot of questions such as whether I will be a good contributor to the society, will my work is useful or meaningful for others? Can I working cooperatively with others? Will my work can support myself and support my family?

Let's eat together ( I am the one with black and red boxed shirt)
Let’s eat together ( I am the one with black and red boxed shirt)

I see that there are a lot of gold opportunity for me and strive to improve my skill and expand mu knowledge. And one of the biggest part of university life (especially at the final year) is internship, it is also a requirement from my university to have it.

At this point, I am not confident with my self since there are some subjects from the university that I am not good at. At first, I am also confused to pick my specialization whether it is 2D or 3D. I started to postpone my plan for internship in the beginning of the year and try to add more portfolio. Since then, I decided to focus on my 2D skill of digital painting and manual illustration. I see most of my friends have finished their final projects and internship while I am still confused to decide when to start internship.

Gambreng Games (Part of GameChanger Team) is recommended by my friend Willi who have work there previously. The studio is also focused with 2D art. Aside from Willi experience, I also know two of the founders Amethyst and Ruby who has inspired me to try developing game. Amethyst is also the founder of game development club in my campus. Gambreng Games has also have a good track record with winning or nominated in gmae awards for both national and international. I have a chance to attend Gambreng Games second birthday and pursue more information regarding internship opportunity. Unfortunately, Gambreng Games is not opening internship this year. My optimism has shatterred because I have to find other place for internship, even though from my interaction with them has greatly increased my interest working with Gambreng Games.

Sometimes I slept while working...
Sometimes I slept while working…

On August, my prayer has been answered. Amber the art director of Gambreng called me 10 in the morning but I don’t pick it up since I am still asleep. I try to contact him back, and he offer me to be part of GameChanger team. With no hesitation I accept the offer and on Saturday I go to the studio to meet Amethyst and Ruby for further interview.

When I first join, Ascender is on the process of polishing the prototype. Before I take part of it I was tasked to create the concept art of Rajumla city. It is the first challenge because the concept art of other city is highly complex with varied perspective. But I try to learn on how to draw it. Since the task is not quite successful, I was asked to develop the dynamic environment of prototype.

Once again, I am hesitated because I haven’t doe it before but I keep experimenting with what I have made before. I made mistakes here and there and finally my work is implemented in the game. Slow but sure my confidence has grown, it completely risen when I was tasked to create a cut scene for Ascender opening. For me the task is even bigger than what I have done before. I rarely create a satisfying 2D animation, even thought I am not very confident with the result but everybody is satisfied with my work. It is one of my best achievement.

Preparation for The Booth (Again with the shirt)
Preparation for The Booth (Again with the shirt)

While in Gambreng, I learn a lot of new and not usual daily stuff. I need to hone my skills and work tempo in finishing the task based on the timeline and need to broaden my imagination with my assets. I need to consult with my colleague to find the best fit assets for the game. I also be part some of the biggest gaming and ICT event in Indonesia such as INAICTA, COMPFEST and GDG Prime 2015. I promote the game to a lot of people and I am really happy that eople enjoy the game. In making games, of course there will be problem, tension and obstacle in it. I enjoy my adventure with GameChanger team, I learn a lot !!! A Good Luck for all of them…

DEVLOG#03 – Hackers Gonna Hack Hack Hack

Ascenderians!

I’m Garnet who take charge in story and web development. The most annoying thing for me just happened this week. Our website http://www.ascenderthegame.com has been hacked twice in two days by some irresponsible hacker groups.

Original Web Screen Shot
How the web supposed to show

First attack was identified by Citrine, Lead Sound Design and Marketing, after he got a report from Australian named Zack in Indie Game Marketing Facebook Group on Tuesday, 1 September 2015, at 6.15 in the morning. I already woke up in that time, read LINE message from Citrine and he sent me the hacked web screenshot. The first hackers launched a Defacing Attack!

1st time hacked site
The First Defacing Attack on Ascender The Game Home Site

In a second, I checked our administrator area in the site, I try to make things right and make the home page right but I didn’t notice that our first devlog already defaced too. I analyzed this attack, it’s not really a harmful attack because its only change the look in our website, anything else (files, codes, images) was completely safe, so I replace the index file and modify .htaccess back to normal. But, I suspected they already put a backdoor (that are related to the next attack).  I tried to track down the hackers and in a short time with our networking (friends of friends of friends) + IP tracker tools, we found out the suspect who responsible for defacing our website.

Then, 2nd attack happened in Tuesday evening! This attack is stronger than before. They not only took the page of our web, but also delete all the files in our server! Mother Father! Holy Ship! Football Club of United Kingdom!

The 2nd Attack Screenshot on Ascender The Game Website

After took off from my prime job and got home, I worked on this attack long enough. I’ve been able to track 4 IPs that are inject some scripts in our web, 2 from Jakarta, 1 from Palembang, and another 1 from East Java. When I was in the administrative mode, they were active also, so I can easily track down the activities and put a bait to know where the hole of our system. I made some backups, took off their shell (hacker) script, and made up some script as a bait.

Guess what??? The hole has been found, they were using our less secure devlog (original devlog) that has been using hosted WordPress. We decided to move the devlog to http://www.wordpress.com that a way more secure and reliable than hosted WordPress (in fact, it is because that we only know less about hosted WordPress security, but no doubt with its engine). And, here we are at the new devlog of Ascender The Game! The main website http://www.ascenderthegame.com is secured and safe at least for now! Cheerio 🙂

Signing out from Game Changer Team Headquarters! See you in the next story!
